Photochrom Zurich was a producer of postcards that launched in 1895. It used a revolutionary process whereby black-and-white photographs were overprinted by multi-colour lithography, with up to fourteen different ink colours being applied in sequence to produce what the company claimed was “natural colour photography”. It rapidly rivalled the existing black-and-white photographs, but was then overtaken by tinted photographic postcards which were much cheaper to produce.
The Photochrom Company of London operated from mid 1890s under licence by Photochrom Zurich.
