1784-1885
The ‘Old’ Parish Church which opened in 1784-01-08, preceeded the current Parish Church, also situated on Castle Hill at the west end of Peebles High Street. It is suggested that Peebles Castle once occupied this site, but the claim is disputed by historians, such as Robert Renwick and James Watson.
Pews were originally sold by the church to parishioners with the purchase price of the pews contributing to the church building costs. Pews would typically be left as legacies to future generations in the wills of previous owners.
The Rev. Dr. William Dalgleish was the first minister of the old Parish Church where he officiated from 1784-00-00 to 1807-00-00.
