Born in 1882-00-00, Charles Steedman Kerr was the eldest son of James Alexander Kerr, the founder of Peebles News. Valuation rolls indicate that he joined his father’s business at 27 Northgate around 1907, later acquiring the next door shop at 25 Northgate around 1910. He continued to operate from 25-27 Northgate until 1920, whereupon he emigrated with his family to New Zealand, where he died twelve years later in 1932-01-10.
